Germany Says Damage to Baltic Underwater Cables Should be Presumed Sabotage
Two fiber-optic cables – one linking Finland and Germany, the other connecting Sweden to Lithuania – stopped working between Sunday and Monday, recalling previous security incidents in the busy waterway affected by war between Russia and Ukraine.
“We have to state, without knowing specifically who it came from, that it is a ‘hybrid’ action. And we also have to assume, without knowing it yet, that it is sabotage,”
“No one believes that these cables were cut accidentally. I also don’t want to believe in versions that these were ship anchors that accidentally caused the damage,” German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said before a meeting with EU colleagues in Brussels.

Second Subsea Cable Cut in Baltic Sea, Germany and Finland Fear Sabotage
Two undersea fiber-optic communications cables in the Baltic Sea, including one linking Finland and Germany, were severed, raising suspicions of sabotage by bad actors, countries and companies involved said on Monday.
The episode recalled other incidents in the same waterway that authorities have probed as potentially malicious including damage to a gas pipeline and undersea cables last year and the 2022 explosions of the Nord Stream gas pipelines.
The 1,200-kilometer (745-mile) cable connecting Helsinki to the German port of Rostock stopped working around 0200 GMT on Monday, Finnish state-controlled cyber security and telecoms company Cinia said.
A 218-km (135-mile) internet link between Lithuania and Sweden’s Gotland Island went out of service at about 0800 GMT on Sunday, according to Lithuania’s Telia Lietuva, part of Sweden’s Telia Company group.
Finland and Germany said in a joint statement that they were “deeply concerned about the severed undersea cable” and were investigating “an incident (that) immediately raises suspicions of intentional damage.”

Details of Baltic Sea Cable Incident Remain Murky as Danish Coast Guard Shadows Chinese Vessel
A day after the C-Lion1 and BCS subsea data cables in the Baltic Sea, connecting Finland and Germany as well as Sweden and Lithuania, were damaged, specifics of the incident remain unconfirmed.
The incident is reminiscent of a similar event in 2023 when the Balticonnector between Finland and Estonia was damaged. Hong Kong-registered container vessel
NewNew Polar Bear was later found to have dragged its anchor across the pipeline.
Danish authorities appear to have narrowed down a possible culprit to Chinese bulker
Yi Peng 3, which traveled over the reported incident site at the time of the failure. Its AIS track shows the vessel drifting back and forth for around an hour the morning of November 18.

The Onion wins Alex Jones’ Infowars in bankruptcy auction
The Onion, the satirical news company that repeatedly spoofed conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, has won the bankruptcy auction for control over his media empire — most notably InfoWars, the far-right, conspiracy-minded website that served as Jones’ primary online platform.

What’s next for InfoWars remains a live issue. The excess funds initially allocated for the purchase will be reinvested into our philanthropic efforts that include business school scholarships for promising cult leaders, a charity that donates elections to at-risk third world dictators, and a new pro bono program pairing orphans with stable factory jobs at no cost to the factories.

In a first, Phoenix hits 100 straight days of 100-degree heat. (Washington Post)
Excerpt from this story from the Washington Post:
Summers in Phoenix are notoriously hot. But after two punishing summers of record-breaking heat, the latest milestone, set Tuesday, may be the most ominous yet.
At 11 a.m. local time, temperatures in Phoenix hit 100 degrees for the 100th day in a row. The longest previous 100-degree streak was 76 days in 1993. In other words, this year has seen an uninterrupted stretch of 100-degrees days at least 3½ weeks longer than in any other year since records began in 1896.
The relentless heat is testing the will of Phoenix residents. While accustomed to hot summers, many have never endured anything like this. And the heat has proved dangerous for vulnerable groups such as outdoor workers and unhoused populations.
“This is the hottest one I’ve been in,” said Ron Wishon, 55, pushing a bicycle with a flat rear tire through downtown Phoenix.
Last year, heat deaths increased 50 percent from 2022, reaching a record of 645 people in Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix. This year, 150 heat deaths have been confirmed by the government and an additional 440 deaths are under investigation.
The streak, which began on May 27 with a high of 102, shows no sign of ending. In fact, the forecast calls for the heat to escalate this week. An excessive-heat warning will be in effect Wednesday through Friday, when highs are expected to approach 110. Long-range forecast models suggest that highs could reach the century mark or more for two more weeks.

tl;dr: The server at a restaurant on Disney property assured the couple that certain food items were free of dairy and nut contamination and the woman died of severe anaphylaxis shortly after consuming foods they were repeatedly assured were safe. The epi pen they had did not save her life because the food was absolutely contaminated with what were, for her, deadly allergens. And Disney is trying to corporate capitalist their way out of legal accountability.
It is pretty clear cut that they did, in fact, cause this woman’s death. And her husband is asking for $50k in the wrongful death suit to cover the medical and funerary expenses as well as the mental anguish they caused. A modest $50k, not 50 million. A company worth 156.43 billion dollars is trying to dismiss the suit based on a 5 year old free Disney+ trial instead of giving this man what he’s asking for, a fraction of the amount he deserves.
I hope this makes everyone think twice before visiting the park or bringing their child to the park, especially if you or your loved one has an allergy or disability. Disney will kill you remorselessly, refuse to take accountability and traumatize your loved ones further.
Remember kids, negative press does work. And fuck Disney. Fuck Disney big time.
“We’re doing him this HUGEEEE favor because humanity is SOOOOO IMPORTANT TO US!!!!!” says company who humiliated a widower and tried to dismiss a wrongful death suit based on a 5 year old Disney+ contract
Note: this is not altruism by Disney. This is Disney recognising that their heinous and clearly illegal use of the Disney+ TOS wouldn’t hold up in court, and in fact would likely lead to a sweeping precedent that would ban a lot of predatory TOS practices like this one by big corporations. However, if they ‘waive’ this untested and unclear ‘right’ in this instance then no court gets to tell them to fuck off and ban them from doing it next time. They can keep it as a threat for the next time this sort of thing happens to a plaintiff who doesn’t end up getting international attention and doesn’t have the resources to fight back.
This is a cowardly move by a corporation that knows their bullshit is illegal. This is an admission of guilt.

World temperature reached the hottest levels ever measured on Monday, beating the record that was set just one day before, data suggests.
Provisional data published on Wednesday by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, which holds data that stretches back to 1940, shows that the global surface air temperature reached 62.87F (17.15C), compared with62.76F (17.09C) on Sunday.
Earlier this month, Copernicus found that global temperatures between July 2023 and July 2024 were the highest on record.
The previous record before this week was set a year ago on 6 July.

On Monday evening, the video-sharing service Nico Nico streamed a live debate for candidates of the Tokyo gubernatorial election. While all 56 candidates were invited to appear and talk about their vision for the capital, it was largely only those with no chance of winning that turned up. Hosted by author and journalist Michiyoshi Hatakeyama, the debate gave wacky candidates such as Yusuke Kawai, dressed as the Joker, and Ken Komatsu, the leader of the Golf Party, the opportunity to speak to a wider audience as the mainstream media refuses to cover them.
Hatakeyama tried to calm the situation. “You’re all candidates. It is the voters who decide who is suitable or not,” he said. Independent candidate Akane Himasora had already seen enough. The YouTuber, who had been participating online, departed after saying, “There is no one here to debate with, so I am leaving now.” Another person who left early was Midori Yokoyama, a self-proclaimed internet comedian representing the NHK Party. “The number of people viewing this has dropped, so I’m leaving,” was his reason. There are 19 candidates from the NHK Party, who have all been asked to “hijack” campaign boards with their posters. The gubernatorial race has been heavily criticized for making a mockery of the electoral process.

A person jumped on the hood of a Waymo driverless taxi and smashed its windshield in San Francisco’s Chinatown last night around 9PM PT, generating applause before a crowd formed around the car and covered it in spray paint, breaking its windows, and ultimately set it on fire. The fire department arrived minutes later, according to a report in The Autopian, but by then flames had already fully engulfed the car.
At the moment, no outlets seem to have reported a motive for the attack. Waymo representative Sandy Karp told The Verge via email that the fully autonomous car “was not transporting any riders” when it was attacked and fireworks were tossed inside the car, sparking the flames. Public Information Officer Robert Rueca of San Francisco’s police department confirmed in an email to The Verge that police responded at “approximately” 8:50PM PT to find the car already on fire, adding that there were “no reports of injuries.”
