Hunter was an American journalist and author who founded the gonzo journalism movement. He rose to prominence with the publication of  Hell’s Angels (1967), a book for which he spent a year living and riding with the Hells Angels motorcycle gang to write a first-hand account of their lives and experiences.

His notable works include, Hell’s Angels (1967) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971) Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ‘72 (1973) The Curse of Lono (1983) The Rum Diary (1998)

He was born Hunter Stockton Thompson on July 18, 1937 in Louisville, Kentucky and died on February 20, 2005 in Woody Creek, Colorado at the age of 67.
