A sandbar submerges on the shoreline of Qinghai Lake, located in northwest China. One of the largest saltwater lakes in the world, Qinghai was shrinking over much of the 20th century, but has been increasing in size since 2004. Shadao Lake, the smaller body of water once encircled by the sandbar, is now part of Qinghai.
