Seen: Arakienema- Blue Period / Last Summer
Who: Nobuyoshi Araki
Where: NADiff Gallery, Tokyo
When: April 13-22, 2018
In a small white room under the NADiff bookstore in Ebisu a DVD of two Arakienema recordings- Blue Period / Last Summer- were projected on a loop. The event/exhibition was timed in part to promote the publication of a photobook version of these series that was published by Dashwood Press.
I sat on a low bench and watched the entirety of both series projected against a white wall. The projector could have been technically better, and its stock speakers didn’t do justice to the accompanied free form music. But seeing the images large and in the sequence they were was certainly an experience. It made me wonder just how the original “live” Arakienema showings must have been to see.
My time in the venue was shared with the following visitors:
-An old man with a photo vest and camera bag.
-A young mother with an infant daughter.
-A fashionable young couple on a date.
