Dunhuang, in the Ganzu province of China, is an ancient stop on the Silk Road.  Because of it’s strategic and economic importance, the Great Wall was extended to the city during the Hand Dynasty.  Many caves were dug out of the nearby cliff and turned into Buddhist shrines and temples.
