Late last year I was on assignment in New Mexico and I had the pleasure of visiting a number of interesting places. One of which was the Very Large Array, made famous by Carl Sagan’s Contact. It’s one of the places I travelled this year that I’d always wanted to see in person. They’re enormous feats of engineering. Each radio telescope dish is 82 feet in diameter and weighs 230 tons. The array itself is located at nearly 7000 feet above sea level and has a maximum spread of 36km. The whole apparatus is also fixed to a rail system that allows it to change position as needed. Needless to say, these behemoths are impressive up close and I was thrilled to photograph them.
