United States v. Bradley Manning [2013] by Alex Sinclair
United States v. Bradley Manning is an experimental installation piece designed to coincide with the landmark trial which commenced on June 3rd, 2013. The original installation took place in the National Photographic Archive, Dublin (a government funded institution) from June 2nd - 16th, 2013.
By constructing a three dimensional cage as a device for public display, the piece aims to highlight the injustices of the trial of Private Bradley Manning, a US whistleblower who raised awareness of war crimes committed by the US. Among the material in question was videos of the July 12, 2007 Baghdad airstrike and the 2009 Granai airstrike in Afghanistan; 250,000 United States diplomatic cables; and 500,000 army reports. It is considered the largest leak of classified information in history.
Private Manning was arrested in May 2010 and was held for over 1,100 days awaiting trial, the majority of which was spent under conditions deemed inhumane by the United Nations.
On February 28th, 2013, Manning pleaded guilty to 10 of 22 charges, not including ‘aiding the enemy’; a capital offense for which the prosecution will not seek the death penalty.
